Leaving Red Bay, AL at Noon on Tuesday, June 11, we traveled a "short" distance of 150 miles to West Memphis, AR. We needed a short drive after covering 700 miles on Sunday and Monday. We had heard about a RV park located so close to the Mississippi River that it floods many times. In fact, friends tried to stay there a couple of weeks ago, but were concerned about high water near Memphis. Calling ahead, we were told they were high and dry. We arrived late afternoon.

View of MS. River from our RV site |
Above picture shows the view of the Mississippi River from our site at Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River RV Park. You can see the river is literally out our door. As we were setting up a huge barge appeared on cue.

Huge barge on MS. River |
The barge above consisted of 45 barges lashed together pushed by 2 enormous tugboats. It was struggling to move upstream because the current was very strong. A few minutes before this barge appeared, we watched a large tree being carried rapidly downstream. The below picture shows a large tree previously deposited on the bank in front of us.

Laundry, restrooms, & showers in mobile trailer |
This RV park has been flooded so many times, they know how to operate and stay open as much as possible. The above picture show a unique laundry, restroom, & shower building. You'll notice it is on a trailer with wheels about 3 feet above ground level. It can take some minor flooding, but they just move it out before a major flood. We saw park maintenance using a front loader to remove large debris from the river bank from recent high water. As we left we noticed this permanent building in the park.

High water mark on building about 14 feet high |
We had a nice evening and morning watching barges move on the river. It was time to move on. We left for Hot Springs on Wednesday, June 12th.
